Preparing in the Neglected Month

Preparing in the Neglected Month

We are at the gates of the blessed month of Ramadan. A month whose blessings are bountiful, and the servant of the Divine needs not knock for entrance as the gates are thrown open for those who seek forgiveness and mercy from Him.

Narrated Abu Huraira:
“God's Messenger (God’s peace and blessings be upon him) said, ‘When the month of Ramadan starts, the gates of the heaven are opened and the gates of Hell are closed and the devils are chained.’"

The Prophet Muhammad (God’s peace and blessings upon him) would single out this blessed month as a month to prepare himself for the month of Ramadan. It is known that the month of Rajab (which precedes Sha’ban) is one with many merits and is one of several sacred months. Due to worshippers focusing heavily on this month, many forget or neglect their worship in the month of Sha’ban. However, the Prophet (God’s peace and blessings upon him) would make sure to spend time in this month, giving it priority and fasting its days. He would fast to the point that some companions felt as though he was fasting the entire month.

An important point for us all to derive from this practice is to not become heedless, to not for a moment forget to realize the importance of our worship, and that we are the ones in need of worshipping Him.

While it is true that the gates of Ramadan will be open for all, and that our deeds will be weighted and multiplied exponentially, some of us will not be prepared. Some will come upon the month of Ramadan having neglected their heart and the preparation needed for it to receive the mercy and forgiveness in this great month. Some may enter heedless and forgetful of their sins and shortcomings, thinking that this month is like any other month of the year. They will not take the same benefit as people who have begun to prepare in this month of Sha’ban. Those individuals who have begun to take themselves to account from now hoping that God gives them life to see the most sacred of all months, those are the people who will reap the fruits of this blessed month.

'A'isha (God be pleased with her) reported:
“The Messenger of God (God’s peace and blessings upon him) did not observe fasting in any month of the year more than in the month of Sha'ban. He used to say: ‘Do as many deeds as you are capable of doing, for God will not become weary (of giving you reward), but you would be tired (of doing good deeds).’” He also said: “The deed liked most by God is one to which the doer adheres constantly even if it is small.”

We should strive hard in this month and push ourselves to our limits and we will find a glorious reward with God. Let this month of Sha’ban be one of preparation for the forgiveness and mercy waiting for us all.
