Harassed while wearing the hijab

I get harassed even though I wear the Islamic legal attire. What is the point of covering up?

Answer

Wearing the hijab is an obligatory act of worship for all adult Muslim women. The hijab is an expression of modesty and chastity. The proper hijab for adult Muslim women involves covering the entire body except for the face and hands. There are no conditions for the color or design of the attire as long as it is not transparent, tight, or revealing.

Hijab is empowering to women because it protects them from sexual objectification. It also puts women in their rightful place as full human beings with intellectual abilities and great potential for growth in all fields of knowledge.

Hijab entitles women to cover up their bodies to prevent public display of their sexuality and any sensible individual regardless of their religious or non-religious affiliation is bound to respect such a personal choice. However, some men tend to see every woman, whether covered up or not, as a sexual object. The issue in this case has nothing to do with hijab but is related to the ill hearts, sick mentalities, and despicable manners of these men.

Revealing clothes are not usually the cause behind sexual harassment. Rather, men with sick minds see any woman, regardless of her dress, as a purely sexual object. You cannot blame yourself for such attitudes as you are free from any guilt. Your hijab is a divine act of worship and you are rewarded for observing it. Wearing the hijab is a well-respected choice which is met with appreciation by sensible people across the world. It is necessary to enact strict laws to protect women from despicable and derogatory actions against them.

And God Almighty knows best.
